Random thoughts from an unconventional Spaniard in the States

Falling for Niagara

Back from our trip to the Nevada desert, we headed for upstate New York and had a day excursion to the beautiful Niagara Falls. For the first time in our lives, we flew a round-trip within a single day: we took a plane from Baltimore in the morning and were back at home just a few hours later.

Five years, a couple of weeks and hundreds of thousands of tourists later, both the Maid and the Mist were still there, still engaged in their seemingly perpetual ritual, still sharing the dance floor between the moose and the eagle…

For me, it was a great experience to go back to what once was the highlight of my first transoceanic adventure. I distinctly remember arriving there from the Canadian side, looking at the balloon with the ‘I heart NY’ emblem and wondering if I would ever get the chance to step into the US. Something which today feels so “normal” just felt so out of reach at that time! You truly can never know what life is gonna bring (almost like a box of chocolates, right Forest? ;-).

I also remember that during my first visit five years ago I had some technical difficulties with a camera that I had borrowed from a friend and all my pictures were lost. Man, what a shame! It felt like the kind of opportunity that you may get once in a lifetime and I just screwed it up, going back home empty-handed with no pictures to hang on to and no more souvenirs than the memories inside my brain. Well, this second time around I made up for my youthful error and devoured hundreds of megs on a pixelating shooting rampage of epic proportions which left me as trigger-happy as the geekest of geeks can be. Revenge, oh sweet revenge!

Anyway, after a long ride from Buffalo Airport in a shuttle driven by a hard-core fan of Howard Stern who simply couldn't get enough of his brand new Sirius satellite radio receiver, we arrived at Niagara Falls Park and went for the observation deck and the Maid of the Mist.

We also had an awesome time going through the Cave of the Winds, where we got real close to the American falls and ended up being severely splashed as a result. Still, being the month of July, the water felt just great!

After the cave, we simply wandered around while taking in the amazing sights and the scenario. We even had time for a nice burger at the Hard Rock cafĂ© (our second visit to one of this places in less than a month… talk about the Stockholm syndrome) and we also had time to fall asleep during a rather boring Imax movie. Hey, don’t blame us… it was siesta time after all… and, anyway, what’s the point of looking at the Falls inside an Imax theater when you can just step outside and have a look at the real thing?

One way or another, the day trip turned out to be pretty fun and, although exhausting, it allowed us to share a few laughs and a whole new collection of great moments.

Viva Las Vegas !

During the third day of our visit to Las Vegas, we actually visited… Las Vegas! ;-)

I must have heard about this place a thousand times, but still I didn’t really know what to expect when I went there… so I was pretty curious about it. I must confess that its reputation as a bastion of kitsch, extravagance and opulent decadence is definitely well deserved.

The city itself is little more than a bunch of huge hotels and casinos scattered around a main avenue known as “The Strip”.

A bit further north, the older part of city also comprises another smaller group of casinos and hotels organized around the so called “Fremont Experience”, which is basically a street that has been covered with a digital screen where catchy audiovisual shows are played every now and then to attract the casual tourists and lure them into the charms of the many armies of coin-hungry slot machines that populate the surroundings.

Believe me, it is quite a weird sensation to walk past some truly luxurious hotels while stepping on a myriad of business-card like pictures of naked ladies in not-so-decent positions that eagerly invite you to phone and meet them. Inside the casinos, people play and play 24/7: some are playing when you go to bed at 3:00am and some are playing when you wake up at 8:00am. Waitresses even bother to bring you free drinks if they see you play, so that you don’t need to leave your spot and may keep on wasting your dough… We also found plenty of wedding chapels which were open 24h. One of them was actually a drive-in, just in case you are in a hurry: Sin City at its best!

Something that I found particularly interesting was the great variety of theme hotels in town. We stayed one night in the Stratosphere, a recognizable landmark due to its futuristic looking tower, which boasts incredible views of the city and actually has a few thrill rides built on its top. My brother and I even got to ride the vertical-drop on the needle of the tower, which certainly was a rather unique experience.

We also stayed one night at the Luxor hotel, which is famous for its huge black pyramid and the light beam that emanates from its top, shooting far out to the sky and rendering the spot visible from many miles away, deep into the surrounding desert.

Other than these two, there are themes and decorations for every taste…

…you can visit the Big Apple…

…you can climb to the Tour Eiffel and walk beneath the Arc du Triomphe…

…you can sleep inside a Medieval castle…

… you can throw coins at the Trevi fountain…

… you can play with the dolphins from a tropical island…

… and you can even get married on a Venetian bridge and celebrate aboard a Gondola.

Vegas, baby… love it or hate it!

Walking the sky: a trip to the Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of those places that many of us have heard about since we were little kids and we have always dreamed of visiting in person. During the second day of our trip to Las Vegas, we had the opportunity to make this dream come true. Armed with tons of enthusiasm and thousands of pictures worth of flash memory, we embraced the adventure. Needless to say, it was one of the highlights of our summer!

We started our journey to the Canyon by boarding the small plane shown in the picture. It was the first time that any of us three flew aboard such a small plane, and thus the air trip was an awesome experience in itself.

We flew over Hoover Dam and it took us around half an hour to get to the West Rim of the Canyon. Once we got there, the views from the plane were simply amazing, as was the feeling of freedom that emerged from realizing that we were flying above this natural wonder; where eagles dare, no strings attached.

Speaking of eagles, our first stop after the landing was Eagle point, an observation spot located right in front of a rock formation with the shape of an eagle (hence its name).

This is also the location of the recently created Grand Canyon Skywalk, which is some kind of futuristic loop-shaped bridge with a glass bottom that lets you literally walk above the Canyon while enjoying the exhilarating view beneath your feet.

Both the Skywalk and the land around Eagle point belong to the Hualapai nation, a tribe of native American Indians. Several samples of their shelters and old-days architecture can be found in the area, as you can see in the pictures below.

Our next stop was at Guano point, another place which overlooks the Canyon and the mighty Colorado River while offering stunning views of beautiful landscapes.

After a quick lunch, we got back into our plane and returned to Las Vegas with a bit of a sunburn and a bunch of memories that are likely to remain forever in our brains and souls: our first visit to the Grand Canyon turned out to be a grand experience indeed !

If you want to check out some more pictures of our day at the Canyon, you can find them here.
