Random thoughts from an unconventional Spaniard in the States

.

A good dam adventure

Our next stop during this busy month of July was at Las Vegas. Anette, a german friend who is currenly doing an internship in New York, joined us there and stayed with us for the whole trip.

During our first day, the three of us took a bus ride away from Sin City and visited Hoover Dam, which, at the time of its construction in 1935, was considered to be one of the top engineering wonders of the world.

The idea behind its construction was, apparently, rather simple: build a huge dam in the middle of the desert by benefiting from the flow of the Colorado River through a suitable gorge known today as Black Canyon, on the border of the States of Arizona and Nevada.

The goal was to make the desert bloom. The outcome was the largest man made lake in the US (Lake Mead), a reliable and clean source of electric power and a reassuring water reserve for the inhabitants of the surrounding areas.

Still, the desert continued to look pretty much like a desert before my eyes: hot, dry, arid and capable of making you wonder if the guy that’s going water-skiing a few meters above the dam is nothing but a heat-induced hallucination…

If you want to, you can look at other pictures from our trip here.
