Random thoughts from an unconventional Spaniard in the States

.

Orlando: ¡Cuate, aquí hay tomate!

For the second weekend of David's visit, we took our first domestic flight and we headed south to the sunny Florida, where we set our temporary headquarters in Kissimmee, a little town near Orlando. We only stayed there for four days but - believe me - they were pretty intense!

We started with a visit to Disneyworld on Friday. We did four theme parks in one single day and, as you can imagine, we ended up totally exhausted. We arrived at Animal Kingdom at around 8.00am and we didn’t leave Magic Kingdom until midnight, having visited Epcot and Disney-MGM Studios in between… that is 16 hours spent amidst exhilarating rides, exuberant decoration, Disney paraphernalia and crappy overpriced food… you know, the kind of things that dreams are made of (at least according to the guy that took our picture ;-). Still, we had a lot of fun and it was a great experience after all.

On Saturday, we visited the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Cape Cañaveral. We got as close as visitors can get to the shuttle launching pads and we were actually rather lucky since the Endeavour (which is scheduled to launch this Wed. 8/8/07) was docked in one of the platforms and we could see it from the distance. We also got to ride a very recent simulator that recreates a shuttle launch and we strolled around the area keeping an eye open for the crocodiles which, according to our most peculiar Cuban tour guide, were distinguished members of the local security staff.

On Sunday, it was time to visit Universal's Studios and Universal's Islands of Adventure. Some of the rides that we enjoyed were truly state of the art. We were particularly impressed by the Revenge of the Mummy and the Spiderman rides, which were amazing. We also liked a lot the Shrek 4D movie, which we both found to be better than the full-length movie 'Shrek the Third' that played in theaters at the beginning of the summer. In terms of dazzling rollercoasters, both the Hulk and the Dueling Dragons lived up to our expectations. Once again, it was a long theme park day, which this time we chose to end with our first diner in a Hard Rock Cafe. Rock’n Roll, baby! ;-)

Finally, we ended our trip to Orlando with a visit to Seaworld on Monday. For those of you who do not know about it, Seaworld is a theme park devoted to sea life where several aquatic animal shows and exhibitions are spiced up with a couple of thrill rides. Shamu, the orca, provided the highlight of the day with an incredible show in the morning. The dolphin show, which introduced the kind of artistic elements that one could expect from a Cirque du Soleil performance, was also beautiful. Finally, being devoted fans of the Pirates of the Caribean trilogy, we couldn’t help riding the Kraken and lovin’it.

As you can imagine, when we got to our plane in the evening we were as tired as we were happy, our bags filled with loads of great memories. If you want to check out more of the pictures we took, you can view them here and here.

Pues sí, es cierto, aunque los años van pasando, uno en el fondo se resiste a crecer... ;-P

    Un abrazo, MJ !
