Sometimes life creates interesting coincidences. This Monday, Americans celebrated Martin Luther King’s day or remembrance. On Tuesday, a black man will be president for the first time. MLK’s famous dream was already the subject of another post in this blog. Tomorrow, that dream will be a step closer. The historic symbolism of the whole scene is astounding. Furthermore, it so happens that King gave his most memorable speech from the stairs of the Lincoln memorial in Washington DC. On Sunday, the Irish band U2 played their song “Pride” standing on the very same stairs. I had heard that song many times, and to be honest I had never paid too much attention to the lyrics. When they sang “one man in the name of love”, I just thought of some kind of romantic plot (also, I still remember Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge and that did not help!). Interestingly enough, it seems that the song was not a love song, but a song inspired by civil right fighters, such as Malcom X and Martin Luther King himself:
"Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride"
A veces, la vida es caprichosa. Este lunes, los estadounidenses celebraron el día de Martin Luther King. El martes, un negro será presidente por primera vez. En su día, el famoso sueño del Dr. King fue el objeto de otro post en este blog. Mañana, ese sueño estará un poco más cerca. El simbolismo histórico de la ocasión es impresionante. Por si fuera poco, se da la circunstancia de que MLK pronunció su discurso más memorable desde las escaleras del Lincoln memorial en Washington DC. El domingo, la banda irlandesa U2 tocó su canción “Pride” (“Orgullo”) en el mismo escenario. Yo había oído esta canción muchas veces, y la verdad es que hasta ahora no había prestado demasiada atención a la letra. Cuando escuchaba el verso aquel de “en el nombre del amor”, me imaginaba que sería una canción más bien romántica (claro, el escuchar a Ewan McGregor cantándola en Moulin Rouge tiene también parte de culpa). Curiosamente, parece ser que no se trata de una canción de amor, sino de una canción inspirada en la lucha por los derechos y las libertades civiles, por personajes como Malcom X y el propio Martin Luther King:
"La mañana de un 4 de abril,
se oyeron disparos en el cielo de Memphis.
Por fin eres libre, te quitaron la vida.
Nunca te arrebatarán tu orgullo."
I liked the performance by U2, and I liked Bono’s message when he claimed that MLK’s dream was “not just an American dream, but also an Irish dream, a European dream, an African dream… an Israeli dream... and a Palestinian dream”. The long silence before the Palestinian bit had a lot of meaning. I wonder what kind of thoughts went through Obama’s brain at that point. The future of many will depend strongly on the nature of those thoughts. Reverend King had a dream. President Obama has a beautiful opportunity to make things better.
Me gustó la actuación de U2, y me gustó el mensaje de Bono cuando dijo que el sueño de Martin Luther King “no es solo un sueño americano, sino también un sueño irlandés, un sueño europeo, un sueño africano… un sueño israelí… y un sueño palestino”. El prolongado silencio antes de la referencia a los palestinos tiene poco de casual. Me pregunto que se le estaría pasando por la cabeza a Obama al escuchar esta alusión. Seguramente, de ello dependerá el futuro y la felicidad de muchas personas. El reverendo King tenía un sueño. El presidente Obama tiene ante sí una bellísima oportunidad para hacer bien muchas cosas.
